Now many of us have heard about the National Rollouts of Contactless Payment Cards by the major card companies and major banks. Most in the industry will tell you that many retailers are jumping onto Contactless and list names like McDonald's, 7-Eleven, CVS, and more. One problem though, these are the names they always use as examples. So why haven't we heard of Burger King or Wendy's on that list. For that matter, why haven't we heard from big box retailers like Walmart or Best Buy. The simple answer is that speed and security aren't enough of a driving factor for them to do so. But Contactless Cards have the capability of changing the value in a unique and personalized way. One thing that the card companies and banks could do is divide the chip on the card to secure, semi-secure, and open sectors with opensource access to the open semi-secure sectors. So why do this, well simple. You open it up and allow these retailers to develop their own loyalty and service applications without the need of requesting access from the card companies or banks. Let them have the freedom to do what they want in an area of the card that doesn't hurt or bother anyone. Now some might mention the past examples of smart cards as loyalty tools which failed to catch on. But that could change by linking that open loyalty app to a person's email or cell phone and allowing any retailer to have access to the customers open sector for opt in enrollment of server based applications and services. Its simple really, you can offer "completly private" (details on that for another blog day), retailer created/specific, services and applications that don't require the user to do anything more than tap that card at wireless network connected readers or kiosks in those stores. Imagine the possibilities. Not simply coupons, but applications and services. Say you have a wireless reader in front of a product your looking at and want to know more like speaking to an expert or hearing some commentary about the product. Just tap that card and your phone rings with either a specialist to help you or a streaming video showing you more detailed in action previews of the product or literature can be sent back to your email. (Don't worry, this is SPAM proof, but deatils for another blog day) The card is capable of linking the unique user to the unique product/service and location. When we allow customization, we allow for the retailer to create and compete with customized offerings for the consumers. This translates to more sales, better marketing, and more loyalty. The contactless cards require contactless readers, and contactless readers can be place any where, because unlike their contact cousins, the lack of moving parts or open interfaces can let you place virtually connected readers and kiosks that link back to consumers. You have the chip, you have a robust wireless interface, now open it up so that retailers can begin to add opt in registration and applications to the consumer. (Opt In security details for another blog day)
